Fine luglio 68, assunto assieme al personale del Centro Studi della OSI, entro all'Ufficio Tecnico del Centro Stile Fiat diretto allora da Gian Paolo Boano, figlio del famoso carrozziere Boano. Stava nascendo la Fiat 128 e ho partecipato allo studio dei suoi particolari.

Dopo qualche mesi in quell'ufficio, vengo trasferito nello Studio dell'architetto Pio Manzù, figlio del grande scultore Giacomo Manzù. Con lui, il lavoro diventa più interessante perchè si lavorava a diretto contatto con i modelli di gesso in scala 1:1. In quel periodo, Manzù crea la 127, per la quale ho studiato particolari come griglia, fanaleria. Ho partecipato ad altri studi di autovetture: una nuova 500 che anticipava la 126, l'Autobianchi G31 (coupé sportivo a motore centrale).

Purtroppo una tragedia interrompe
questa
collaborazione: un lunedi mattina aspettavamo Pio, che non è
più arrivato. Era rimasto ucciso al volante della sua 500 nello
scontro con il pilastro d'un ponte sull'autostrada Milano-Torino.
Lo Studio però non fu chiuso
perchè si doveva portare a termine dei lavori di messa a punto
sul modello della 127. Ci furono affidati altri studi per un
coupé Lancia (è di allora l'assorbimento della Lancia da
parte della Fiat) e del coupé 128 Sport. Con il mio collega
Prever, ne ho creato la linea esterna e seguito tutta la fase della
modellazione. Il nostro modello è stato scelto ed è stata
una fortuna perchè, al Centro Stile, era difficile per un
giovane stilista come me di potere disegnare una nuova auto di
produzione. Di fatto, i progetti di solito erano svolti dai dirigenti.

Avviene una restrutturazione dell'organico del Centro Stile e vengo inserito in un nuovo team di designer, l'Ufficio studi futuri, sotto la guida dell'Ing. Sartorelli, il mio superiore della Osi. In quello Studio, avevamo la libertà di studiare future automobili senza troppi vincoli produttivi, che sviluppavamo dai figurini ai modellini in clay. E' lì che è nata quella che sarebbe diventata la Ritmo, disegnata dall'Ing. Sartorelli. Il modello era molto bello, ma purtroppo, per motivi di costi, la vettura di produzione derivata da questo progetto fu molto modificata ed appesantita.

Malgrado la possibilità di studiare modelli senza costrizioni, sentivo che mi trovavo su un binario morto, con poche possibilità di evolvere. Non avevamo nessun contatto con la produzione, né con l'engineering od altri uffici di ricerca della Fiat, come il centro prove di sicurezza o la galleria del vento. Non ci era permesso di confrontarci con i tecnici degli stampi, dei metodi, ne ci hanno portati a visitare una linea di montaggio. Cosi quando sono venuto a conoscenza che lo Studio Ford di Torino cercava un designer, mi sono presentato e sono stato assunto fine 1972.
